Have to say not without the odd moment of drama, after lock down and having a 'post event' rum, Irma decided it was not and promptly shat herself and struck 'down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers'
Having a smoke in an open foyer rummed up with the chaps watching more rain in 10 minutes than you would see in April and casually observing near distant palms being ripped in 80/100 mph winds I suggested than she may want to kiss my arse as the bar was open - fuck me gently, an instant thunder clap above and a lightening bolt flash hit the hotel not more than 200 ft away, thought a bloody bomb had gone off and was put back in my box with a dilated sphincter
For the record, that was a hurricane that had shifted north by 50/75 miles, us another 100 south, a mere trifle by comparison to that wreaked upon Berbuda and the Cat 5 that was due overhead from our evacuation point - was enough, seen tropical storms but this was cut from different cloth, lesson learned, don't take the piss!

My grandparents had to move out of their street because of an unexplored bomb issue. When they got back in anything of value had been "removed".

Was in Orlando in 99 when it was hit... think it was Lloyd if I rem' rightly... not sure if it was gr 1 or a tropical storm by the time it got to us... fairly Mork'n'Mindy for sure and minimal damage (debris and a few street/hotel signs)

zico... they was showing the presenters from CNN yesterday doing it... looks amazing... 10 mins before they was getting half killed by 140mph+ winds... 10 mins later pure calm... some bloke brought his (3 legged) dog out for a walk and a piss and to check on his gaff... the presenter managed to get a new pair of oil skins to start up again when the eye passed through... and the amazing thing was the birds... they just stick in the eye of the hurricane as they know it's the safest place!! Absolute superb viewing yesterday it was

Has anyone ever been in the "eye" of a storm? From what I can gather it all gets weirdly quiet and calm when in the eye, all very Day After Tomorrow'ish!!!

It all depends on the type of accommodation you're in. If it's strong enough to withstand the winds, you'll probably be fine if you stay away from the windows.
I was in Bangladesh during a couple of cyclones (which is the South Asian way of referring to a hurricane). It's all rather dramatic - the strange atmosphere before it hits, the incredible noise, the sight of trees bent double and sometimes uprooted.
The most dangerous thing there was all the stuff flying through the air. Many local houses had corrugated metal roofs, which were quickly dislodged by the winds and remained airborne for as long as the cyclone was there and decapitated one person. The worst damage we got was some broken windows.

Mmm yes agreed. A mate's daughter works for Branson on Necker Island and was sheltering with 30 others in a bunker when it hit. Fortunately she is ok but probably out of a job now.

You have to laugh at these British holidaymakers who are complaining on the media that the UK government didn't send a plane to pick them up.
When I got hit by the hurricane in 2005 it never even crossed my mind to call the British consulate in Florida.
I got the mandatory evacuation order from the Sheriff of Monroe County shoved under my door at the resort and decided to ignore it. There was a local who had been through a few hurricanes who told me the best thing was to stay put and wait it out.
So we watched the hurricane come in. All the palm trees were bent double, stuff was being tossed around everywhere and the waves were huge so water was slapping around everywhere.
By the following morning it had passed through and the clean up started. As ever in America it was all done very efficiently.
Net, when you get hit by a hurricane on holiday it means there's a day when you can't really go to the beach. That's it. Asking for UK government assistance - and a plane ffs! - shows just how bad the entitlement culture has got in modern Britain.

Today the BBC's morning team were clearly devastated by the lack of death and destruction.
They were reduced to interviewing at great length a couple of very, very polite and rather sweet-natured Florida cops who spoke sincerely and courteously, if in truth rather uninterestingly, about the dangers of fallen power cables and the rescue of unmarried mums from damp buildings.

I can't stand business people like Branson.
His preference has always been to won government protected monopoly or cartel franchises so that he can operate without competition.
That was the whole point of setting up Virgin Atlantic - to take up the fourth slot of the cartel vacated by British Caledonian.
Under the cartel rules, only four operators - two American and two British - were allowed to run flights between LHR and JFK. They collaborated on fares and of course fleeced the passengers. The US and British governments authorised the cartel, astonishng though it sounds today.
He went after Camelot - again a monopoly franchise. And he operates the west coast rail franchise, which is another monopoly. That's the way he likes it.
In businesses where he has had to compete he fails miserably. Virgin Cola, Virgin Vodka, Virgin nightclubs. All disasters.
He made a fortune in the music business of course, but that business was run by Will Whitehorn, not him.
